Production Services

Founded in 2006, Mandarin Film has nigh-on a decade of experience of helping foreign crews shoot in China. From feature length documentaries, to major series, one off documentaries, corporate and viral videos, events, live streams and more we're here to help you make your shoot work in China.

With that aim in mind, we'll support you 'script to screen and anything in between'.Because we have a strong in-house team and also run an equipment house, stock footage database and editing suites all based in Beijing, we can offer an unparalleled bilingual one stop shop.  Turnkey services that Mandarin Film can offer are: permissions, casting, bi-lingual story development and script writing, location scouting, research, budgeting, fixing, live-streaming, international standard cameramen, directors, editors and other crew.

Mandarin Film has worked with major production houses around the world to make content for broadcasters like National Geographic, Discovery, BBC, Sky, Arte, ZDF and many more.  On the corporate side we work for major multi-national clients like Audi, Reebok, Starbucks and Intel.  Examples of some of our larger recent projects include a six x one hour series for BBC and PBS Story of China, a feature documentary on Urbanization and providing production services across Asia for Intel.

Feel free to look for further examples of our production services work on the television, big screen and corporate sides.

Script Writing, Research and Development

Mandarin Film has a bilingual team of script writers that can ‘blue sky think’ your project, brainstorm together and come up with a number of options based on your brief.  We work closely and collaboratively to come up with concepts that will hit the sweet spots and key target audience.

We are often approached when existing concepts are in development or have been green-lit but the China content is still hazy.  We can bring these scripts into focus by hunting down great characters, experts, academics or stories that will shake the story into life and delight an international or Chinese audience.  ‘Fresh China Works’ is the Mandarin Film tagline – which means we go after new, interesting and never-been-done-before content, or give a fresh and piquant twist to an old story

Examples of ‘script to screen’ work are the campaigns for real estate developers Kardan Land and Parkview Green, in the documentary world there is Green China Rising, Thirsty Earth and Brocade Wars, and in terms of NGO work there is ACCC and INBAR.

Permissions, Permits and Visas

Before you get too excited about your new idea, you will need to make sure you can get the required permissions to come and shoot in China.  For the non-initiated this can be a bewildering and frustrating process.

Luckily Mandarin Film has a great relationship with CARFTE (The China Association for Radio, Film and Television Exchange) which is the government body that deals with all permits for foreign crews shooting in China.  (It is the association under the umbrella of SAPPRFT – formerly SARFT -  State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television)

Because we have two or three projects at any one time in with CARFTE, and more than eight years experience working with them, we are a trusted partner and can do everything possible to ensure a smooth and (relatively) pain-free navigation of the red tape.

We also know what pitfalls to avoid, how to word shoot plans and projects to maximize their chances of success, and even which ‘minder’ from CARFTE to choose to make sure your shoot stays on track.   When you work with us, we provide a ‘starter pack’ giving information on the various information that will be required of you, and are with you every step of the way.
