Race Across the World

Mandarin Film worked together with Studio Lambert, an award-wining British TV production company, to produce an original travel documentary program, “Race Across the World”.

华影青橙与英国获奖无数的电视制作公司Studio Lambert联合制作了原创旅行纪录片节目Race Across The World。

Broadcast during primetime in the UK on BBC2, and attracting more than 2 million viewers, “Race Across the World” spans six-hour-long episodes.

《Race Across the World》每集时长一小时,共六集的系列纪录片,在英国BBC第二频道的黄金时段播出,每集都有超过200万人的固定观众。

In this series, 6 teams of British contestants travel from London, through Europe and Asia, to reach their final destination, Singapore. Their journey shows the history, landscape, local culture, and food of each country that they pass through along the way.

Mandarin Film commenced the production of the China segment. We helped to research potential interesting stories and obtain location permits across Gansu, Shan’Xi, Sichuan and Guangxi Provinces.

The format of “Race Across the World” gives contestants limited time and money to make their way over land to reach their destination. Audiences get to explore the wonder of China alongside the contestants as they try various ways to get to their goal. From taking a bamboo raft on the Lijiang River, to queuing up to board a high-speed train, and squeezing into an old-fashioned tuk-tuk, anything goes, except boarding a plane!

From the border of Horgos in North-west of China, to Pingxiang, the China-Vietnam border in the Southeast, Mandarin Film followed 4 teams of contestants across half of China to make this challenging show happen.

This is not your standard travel documentary. This British reality show is characterised as “unscripted”. Producers cannot pre-plan the routes or schedule shoots beforehand like on a usual travel program. Instead, the contestants were the “bosses”, where they wanted to go, the film crew followed.

The uncertainty of at what time and by what route the contestants would arrive posed the biggest challenge to our producers. We had to be prepared for every possible path and be flexible with last minute changes. Acting on the contestants’ decisions, we needed to make logistical arrangements very swiftly and quickly contact locations to keep the filming going smoothly.

After 8 exciting days, contestant Joshua Nawras declared, “China is the best country we’ve been to so far!”
